The children have been trying to get a sense of how far it is, and how high it is. For a better understanding, I took this snap shot of the racers, on 18 June, as they were passing through the highest parts of Tour Divide Route. So then I could see their positions on the Elevation plot. Geographically I know where Grants, New Mexico is, as well as Salida, Colorado, so this helps with understanding the route.
The elevation shows the route from Canada to Mexico. As Erik started in Mexico, we have read the route dots right to left.
1st dot, Silver City, New Mexico (not on map)
2nd dot Grants, New Mexico (not on map)
3rd dot, Cuba, New Mexico, (TH on map)
4th dot, start of Rio Grande National Forest (BR on map)
5th dot, border between New Mexico and Colorado (JH)
6th Dot, very near the highest point of the route(DW)
7th dot, Salida, Colorado (not on map)
Larger map below including Grants (blue MI), and Salida, (yellow DW). Steamboat Springs is at the top of the route.
