The church was built between the 12th and 14th centuries in the southern Romanesque style, with fortifications added in 1581 in advance of the Ottomans.
The church interior is completely painted by John of Kastave, around 1490. The weird and fascinating "Dance of Death" is on one wall.
The church is inside a fortified wall.
The church looks very stark and plain on the outside. The inside has detailed images in the medieval style.
The 12 months are painted in the two ceilings on the edges, as well as the story of Jesus is in the centre, as well as the 7 Day creation story.
A number of female saints are also painted.
Photographs are not allowed, so I got these images off the internet.
Detail of the Dance of Death
Just down the road was a Gostinja. I got some red wine soup with made with Prosciutto and bread. Refreshing, it tasted like mulled wine with ham.
I also tried the local pasta dishes, fuzi with truffles, ravioli with abergine, and gnocchi with wild nettles. All were fabulously delicious.
