Koper - Slovenia
A visit to the coast today, Koper is a port city in Slovenia, on the Adriatic coastline.
It's medieval old town centers around Titov Trg, (Tito Squre), a square with Venetian-influenced landmarks such as the Praetorian Palace and a Gothic-style loggia, or Town Hall
Praetorian Palace
The Gothic design dates from the middle of the 15th century, with the outer staircase and balustrade added fifty years later, and the overall appearance of the façade taking shape in 1664 after significant renovations. After serving various purposes following the downfall of the Venetian Republic at the hands of Napoleon in 1797, the building underwent a decade long restoration in the 1990s.
Old Town Hall
It is the only preserved Gothic town hall in Slovenia. The earliest part of the existing building dates from 1462, when building work began on a replacement for an earlier Loggia that had stood in the same position on the north side of the main square of Koper, opposite the Praetorian Palace.
Following a plague outbreak in Koper in 1500s, the facade of the Loggia was embellished with coats-of-arms, and a terracotta statue of the Madonna and Child was erected in a niche above the left corner column. Further work was carried out in 1698, when a second storey was added and the facade was extended with two additional arches taken from the west side of the palace
There were plenty of narrow streets and alleyways to explore.
I like how the washing is hung above the street.
